MCPON Guidance

Mission, Vision, and Guiding Principles:
To provide leadership to the enlisted force, advice to Navy leadership, and a combat ready naval force. We are a Senior Enlisted force that serves first and foremost as Deckplate leaders. We are committed to developing sailors and enforcing standards. We remain responsive, aligned, and well connected to both leadership and Sailors. We conduct ourselves in a consistently professional, ethical, and traditional manner.
Our guiding principles are:
  • DECKPLATE LEADERSHIP
  • INSTITUTIONAL and TECHNICAL EXPERTS
  • PROFESSIONALISM
  • CHARACTER
  • LOYALTY
  • ACTIVE COMMUNICATIONS
  • A SENSE OF HERITAGE
Navy Heritage - Supplemental Discussion Video

MASTER CHIEF PETTY OFFICER OF THE NAVY:

We are all beneficiaries of this evolving process to Zero in on Excellence ... First Classes, Chiefs, the Wardroom, our Total Force have a vital stake in keeping it on an upward trajectory. Necessity and nature dictate that we constantly breathe new life into it if we want the practice to remain relevant and to effectively support the CNO’s Sailing Directions and his tenets of warfighting first, operating forward and being ready.

My guidance for CPO 365 will seem familiar in many respects but fundamentally different in others... The ingenuity of our Chiefs in fusing mission requirements with opportunities to conduct productive training will keep us methodically moving in the right direction. I want to reiterate the significance of instilling fundamentals like good order and discipline, our Core Values and the Navy Ethos early on, and of reinforcing them throughout the year with practical application. Additionally, look for occasions to incorporate interaction with the Wardroom. Many officers I’ve met expressed their enthusiasm for enhancing the relationship between our communities. We should leverage every chance to do so as these are the future flag officers, commanding officers and department heads who will take our Fleet over the horizon.

  • How do we accomplish this?
  • Who makes it happen?
  • When are we "the best?"
  • How do we remain the best?

Watch the Video on the right - then have a brief group discussion and ask:

Know your Sailors: Pick one person from the group and call them within the next week.  Learn who they are - not just  what their name is.
 2.  Write a one-page biography about yourself.  Write this yourself.  Use 12 or 10 point  font, Courier New.
 3.  What is the most decorated ship in the Navy that is currently operational?  Write about it using Navy standards.

More Ideas

  1. Memorize and and be able to speak about the meaning behind the Mission Vision and Guiding Principles (MVGPs)
  2. Memorize the Sailors Creed (Most FCPOs did not do well at this - get there now!
  3. USS Constitution: One page Military History report.
  4. Each FCPO will get to know each other FCPO in their group as part of the "Know you Sailors" leadership principle. Details will include depth - NO shallow understanding. This will be accompanied by a discussion on what kinds of things are important to know and when is intrusive leadership acceptable and when is it too much?
